Have you ever been stuck between picking something, and not sure which way was the best way? Well now I was recently in that dilemma. I couldn't decide between light wallpaper, or dark wallpaper. My furniture is dark mahogany wood, and my floor is light oak wood. In the end my partner decided we would go with the dark wallpaper, because this way, it 'ties' my furniture to the feature wall and we injected some colour using fabrics (lamp shades, curtains, rug etc) which really provides a nice contrast to the dark furniture.

The furniture industry continues to change in the UK and something which reminds ous of this fact is the sad demise of Pinetum. In their day Pinetum were one of the leading wholesalers of furniture and their product could be found in many large independent bricks and mortar furniture shops.

Times change and Pinetum failed to change with them, instead of embracing the internet they sought to resist and try to keep to the old way of operating. It was a fight they fatally lost and for many businesses this should be a lessen learned.

We have just had a puppy and of course anything and everything is a toy to be played with and chewed.

We use Johnsons Anti Chew Spray seems to do the trick, I think it tastes of lemon and dogs really do not like it.

I have heard that you can stop Cats Scratching furniture by using lemon juice, I have heard a mixed response from that solution. A friend has an old piece of furniture set aside for this purpose and has encouraged kitty to let loose on that.

Over the last few years we have really seen the rise of a sort of French Style Painted Furniture and was just considering what the next fashion will be.

Certainly Oak Furniture remains popular but a lot of the market has now moved onto a more rustic type of finish albeit still oak.

I'm putting my money on Shabby Chic gaining popularity which is very much like the Painted French style mentioned earlier although a little more distressed. Actually thinking about the term Distressed has gone slightly out of fashion it is more marketable when it is sold as Shabby Chic, so a change of name but not a change of style.

I do recall a few years back when Black Ash Furniture was all the rage you do not see much of that about these days.

It has been a while since we updated this site so some little known Furniture Facts:-

The love seat is essentially two chairs joined together, each facing the opposite way to the other. The important element of this design is that it allows two people to sit very close together and converse face to face; something that is not so easily achieved when sitting side by side in the conventional fashion.

Orthodox Jews used the wood from their dining tables to make coffins. This was because they said prayers at the table every time they sat down to a meal, so took the view that it was wood that had been blessed.

The free standing wardrobe as it is known today first started to appear in the 1600s. Before that time, the people rich enough to need one had entire rooms devoted to hanging their garments.

Wine racks have always been designed to hold bottles so that the wine stays in contact with the cork. This was to stop the cork, which is harvested from a species of Oak tree, from drying out and leaking or letting in air.

The 1960s actress Jayne Mansfield allegedly managed to furnish her mansion for free. She wrote to furniture suppliers and asked for samples of their products in return for them being able to tell their customers that the actress used their furniture.

As we close in on November the biggest selling furniture item is Dining Tables. I recently looked at one of these over at John Lewis Sale but if quality is a non issue then you can perhaps consider something like the Ashmere Ash Venner Dining Table.

Although Ashley Furniture are a big US retailer I thought this news was relevant to the general furniture industry. A law firm have filed a class action lawsuit against Ashley Furniture, their claiming that all hourly workers have been short changed over the course of the last few years.

The firm filing the action are claiming that Ashley Furniture were:-

Not paying hourly employees for all hours worked in a day.
Failing to calculate and pay the proper amount of overtime pay.
Failing to pay hourly employees for working during break and meal periods.
Requiring employees to work off the clock.
Failing to pay hourly employees the proper incentive pay rates according to the companies own policies.

New Furniture Styles

Well the summer is almost over and the quiet period for furniture retialers comes to an end and hopefully business will pick up.

Just pondering over what will be big this year, the peak sales period for furniture is January and the most popular trend seems to be the French style Oak furniture. It's quite dark compared to the contemporary style Oak.

Prices vary according to quality but the best balance seemed to have been Devonshire, however I've heard they've pulled this range but I've seen other stockists carry it as Evergreen.

There are other options of course but this was the best from the Chunky Styled French Style as opposed to the Elegant French Style Oak Furniture.

The death of Branded Furniture

Recently I did a piece on branded furniture over on my G Plan Furniture blog.

It does beg the question the quality of big brands when compared to what some of the internet retailers can offer there isn't much comparison.

It's a strange market, branded goods are normally superior to the competition. For example the Apple Ipod is better than most of your cheap and cheerful mp3players.

In furniture this just isn't true, often unbranded goods are a better quality and price.

Dining Tables Design or Quality

It seems to us at the moment those seeking the very latest trends in furniture fashion have to sacrifice some quality. If you look at say Dwell Furniture those furniture is the height of fashion but dovetailed joints 100% solid wood is a rare offering for that company and the prices are expensive to say the least.

Conversely if you took the two big on-line furniture retailers Right Price Furniture and Oak Furniture Land their offers are not exactly the height of fashion but the quality is fantastic.

Take the table being offered from Dwell (above), that's a very nice design but it's an Oak Veneered table being offered at £699. Now compare this to the table offered by Oak Furniture Land (left) a bigger table 100% solid oak and yet is it also priced at £699.

Retro Furniture - The Newest Trend

It seems the latest fashion in furniture is to use words like 'eco credentials' so green is certainly in currently. So natural sustainable wood and not necessarily the big chunky oak stuff we're used to.

It wouldn't come as much of a shock to see almost a retro minimlaist style with the material being used Bamboo.

The picture by Terance Conron on Octopus books demonstrates just this sort of style.

What would you call it.... I suppose 'eco style furniture'.

Quality Furniture Ranges

Seeing a few of these new ranges called Evergreen not much is known about them going to have to do some digging.

I suspect it's a re-branding!

Loads of furniture companies do this for example I know BHS sell furniture from YP furniture but you never see it branded as YP furniture.

I think many of the traditional furniture suppliers are desperate to stop consumers looking at furniture in store then looking to buy it cheaper by going home and googling it.

I suspect their time has gone you can't stop the internet enabling consumers to get the best deal possible.

At Furniture Choices we like to look at new trends and what current people are choosing. I'd say the latest fashion is the 'quite' dark oak french furniture.

There are a few manufacturers offering this range. The Merwent pictured we think actually comes from France, the French Oak Rustic that a few sites are featuring another style. It's slightly darker as you can see:-

This is being made in the Far East and a few companies are importing it into the UK and doing the usual re-branding.

As ever always look for as many photos as possible and if it doesn't say 100% Solid Oak or 100% Solid Wood you can be safe to assume it's not!

London Furniture Show gets Postponed

Further to discussions with the key exhibitors, the company Insight Exhibitions has decided to postpone the 2010 London Furniture Show. It cites the recent economic downturn and the lack of number of exhibitors as the reasons.

David Wilkins the managing director of Insight Exhibitions, says:

“I remain convinced that a new London-centric, furniture show is needed, and that May is the ideal time in terms of delivery of new ranges to retailers for the key Autumn selling period.

"However, we are re-thinking the show’s size and format and possibly the venue and we are currently speaking to key people in the industry, after all it is their needs that this show is all about. We will then announce our plans for the 2011 London Furniture Show.”

Buying Furniture Tips

When buying furniture it's often a balance between quality and looks. My wife always goes for looks but I'm looking at quality first and looks second.

The very first thing I tend to do is open any drawers and look for dovetailed joints, then the drawer bases, are the runners strong enough to last a lifetime? Then it's around the back of the unit to see if that's made from solid wood or plywood.

Shopping online is tricky as often retailers show you a very nice picture but don't show the detail. It's a bit like buying a car and not looking inside it!

These days I look for 'solid wood throughout' and avoid 'solid wood with veneer'.

Ok if your buying in Ikea your not going to get the quality but at least you can get good value.
